Seasonally adjusted construction employment rose from March
to April in 29 states, decreased in 18 and held steady in three, plus the
District of Columbia, according to an AGC press release . Seventeen of the
states with monthly increases also added construction jobs from February to
March. Increases in stimulus–funded projects and growing demand for single
family construction helped
facilitate
this boost in construction employment.
Kansas experienced the highest monthly increase in
construction employment, followed by North Dakota, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Massachusetts. Maine experienced the highest monthly decline, followed by
Vermont, Rhode Island, Hawaii and South Carolina.
The press release also noted that the number of states with year–over–year job gains rose to
four. This was led by a jump of 8.1 percent in North Dakota. Contractors
also added jobs from April 2009 to April 2010 in Kansas, Alaska, and Arkansas.
