Builders Association Director of Labor Denise Herdrich stresses the importance of knowing what's in your contract. With the holidays approaching, keep in mind that Christmas and New Year's Day are being observed on December 26 and January 2, and employees working under the contract on those days must be paid accordingly.  

At the national level, in a move that proved a surprise to both the AGC of America and the Executive Board of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Vince Giblin announced his retirement as President of that union this week.

Giblin immediately vacated his office, indicating he wanted to spend more time with family. He recommended that General Secretary-Treasurer Jim Callahan (Local 15 in New York) fill the rest of his term, which doesn't expire until April of 2013. Second General President Brian Hickey, a stationary engineer from Chicago, was selected as the new General Secretary-Treasurer.
